  • Tailors to In-store Readymades to Online Readymades

The sequence below is hypothetical but powerful in its simplicity to reveal the tragedy that is garment selling and shopping in India.

Sometimes even tailors got the fit wrong in spite of all the measurements. And most of the times, tailors didn’t have the fancy skills to match the desires, visions and fashions.

In-store readymades changed that. Plenty of variety, plenty to try in front of the mirror and variety of looks to pick from. The errors in ‘tailoring’ and ‘making’ got obscured by the sheer number available to try and fit into. Even if one unit didn’t fit, you could try another unit of the same design and it would fit.

When they started with online readymades, they kept the errors in ‘tailoring’ and ‘making’, removed the facility of ‘trying’ any number of things to get into a good fit, and instead started tom-tomming variety of lacs and crores of units.

Selling fashion online is tragic for a lot of people, sellers and buyers both. But then tragedies consume time and the time spent in contributing to tragedies eventually flips them into happiness. Starting up over and over is happiness too.

  • Mindset

Woman puts in a lot work to prepare some luscious food. Family enjoys the food but fails to appreciate and compliment her. Woman feels bad.

Woman wants to look great. Wants to go to gym, wants to buy lovely dresses and jewelry.

Pays the gym for her own effort.

Pays the boutique for designer’s and tailor’s efforts.

Wants to pay for silver, but not for the effort to turn silver into lovely jewelry.

We’ve interacted with thousands of Indian women like that in the course of running Mississippi Earrings.

  • Big Software

How big a part does big software take from an employee’s working time every day?

Is there a way to compare such times?

My hypothesis is that an organization that demands a lot of such time every day is already less effective or will be less effective very soon.

As good as the argument above sounds, it still feels vague but important nonetheless. Still a few terms to be defined and observed.

  • Attention to Detail

I see it mentioned in almost every job description I read.

Do school or college teachers utter those words while talking with students? Wait, I can’t remember one instance from my school or college times when I heard a teacher talk about it.

Are the shoe-makers paying attention to detail?

    More questions…

    What exactly is detail?

Next question is, which details matter? Is there any detail that doesn’t matter? How does one manage to answer such questions satisfactorily at all?!

One cover-up or measure of successful attention to detail is sales. If sales happen, everyone assumes, attention to detail has been paid. And yet, is that it?

  • Is injustice relative?

The builder has cheated the buyers. I am also one of the buyers. I understand what kind of cheating has happened and is still happening. I am making efforts to figure a way.

    Advice given to me:

Compare injustice to you with injustice to others; find your happiness out of injustice that hasn’t happened to you.

    Wow! Unbelievable Indians!

Let’s substitute the word ‘injustice’ with ‘cheat’.

Compare cheating done with you, with cheating done with others; find your happiness out of cheating that hasn’t happened with you.

    That triggers questions:

What kind of cheating are you good with? What kind of cheating you aren’t good with? Based on what do you decide that you ought to accept being cheated and enjoy all the same?

  • Shadow Partner

Is there a person whose descriptive title may be Shadow Partner?

In my mind, this person is your partner and shadows you all the time.

When you prepare a catalog for purpose of ecommerce, you need a shadow partner. I am not sure, if shadow partners work in plural.

I will write more about this. Let me find one at least, first. Well, I had one. That shadow partner though left too soon. Did she even know she was a shadow partner? If she had known, would she have left?

  • Creativity Questions on Quora

Somehow Quora is showing me plenty of questions related to ‘developing creativity’.

Some question-submitters ask for techniques to develop creativity.

What that means is they’ll first get a hang of the techniques and then be able to do creative things.

If that’s the way it is, it is strange.

Creativity is entwined with moving the hands, the body, the legs, the thoughts.

Instead of asking, just decide to make something on your own. And then do everything to give shape to whatever you’ve decided.

  • Space Compression

    Virtual World

    (Online) Gaming

    Videogame

What are the opposite respectively for each of these expressions?

    Physical World / Real World

(Offline) Gaming? Should be a Cricket Ground or Football Ground!

    Non-video Game?

It gets weird as we think how easily some expressions slip out of our mouth and are understood just as easily.

One of the greatest losses in cities is this compression of space. No urban planner or politician has been able to do much about it. No community either, if one can find such a thing in any city.

  • Bullet Point Videos

I got an idea that theories available in books should be converted into dances. Outrageous, no?

Bullet points got converted into Youtube videos.

Folks are watching Youtube videos like mad and bullet-point channels are doing so well.

Are you good at bullet-points? You can become a Youtube sensation.

  • Abundance of Celebrations

At once celebrations were scarce. Now they are abundant.

And semi-celebrations are more abundant than celebrations.

Today’s semi-celebrations compete with celebrations of earlier times.

Celebrations today would compete with rare mega-celebrations of earlier times.

In fact, even mega celebrations are abundant these days.

Time has to be filled, it might as well be filled with celebrations Indians feel.

  • And the Oscar goes to…

Searching for good books to read is an old pastime for me.

You nut, Oscar is not for books!

Hey Naatu Naatu, when ordering online wasn’t an option, I used to visit Crosswords at Mithakali Crossroads quite often.

The Bestsellers section attracted attention. Books carrying the words New York Times’ Bestseller attracted attention and lured me into buying. Booker Prize Winner, those words also lured me into buying some. Later, even ‘nominated for’ lured me into buying.

Aww, even as I write this I open the wikipedia page for Literary Award to check my GK of awards awarded across the world.

The horror lay in discovering that in following lists and awards I made weird choices.

Much much later, I could frame and tell myself that buying is experimentation, and what we buy are experiments.

Once treated this way, if a buy turns out to be a disappointment, I am able to coax myself rather easily into analyzing how I came to make such a buy.

One thing leads to another, now I ignore awards altogether. In fact, once a thing gets awarded, I tend to look the other way.

    Award means avoid.

You nut, you are jealous. You are undermining Naatu Naatu’s success at the Oscars?! God will not forgive you! You anti-n…

Congratulations Mr/Ms Songmaker! Congratulations Ms/Mr Listener! Thank you Ms/Mr Reader!

Did I maintain gender equality?! You bet I did. One gender was awarded more equality than another. You see that?

My smirky Dad tells me last night, “The song got an Oscar and you say you are not impressed!”

I must get an Oscar for not getting impressed. Please introduce that category. The category of not impressed.

Please introduce an award for Tiktok dances too; I am trying to get into that. Please. You want suggestions for categories?

  • You are the problem

You were treated badly by teachers but others weren’t. Problem lies with you not with the teachers.

Why did these teachers spare the others but not you? Problem lies with you.

Admit it, you are the problem.

Others built careers. You didn’t. Problem is with you,

  • Aggressive Reader?

What makes reading a special system of behavior?

Think about it, can you ever be an ‘aggressive’ reader?

The other day I used an expression mad reader in a conversation with a friend. Could I have used aggressive reader?

There is nothing like aggressive reading. Even robots meant to crawl the words can’t be aggressive in crawling. They can be fast, but not aggressive.

That says something about reading shaped behavior.

  • PayU unable to use data

I read someone’s comment: businesses need to keep with up tech.

I countered: tech needs to keep up with businesses.

I’ve been chasing PayU for quite a while. But a little transaction that they’ve tried goofing up got me chasing them all morning today.

These guys are apparently said to be sitting on ‘data’ with which they solve problems. This is the result that the likes of these big tech companies yield. Of course, I am just an anecdote; they have all the data.

Tell us about your favorite pair of shoes, and where they’ve taken you.

Where they’ve taken me? Not far geographically. Largely in my neighborhood.

In terms of feeling, very very far. May be sharpened all my senses, all across my body.

  • Sportwear

Given the shapes of our cities, by and large it is hard for folks to adopt sports-driven activities. Am excluding ‘watching sports’ from the expression ‘activities’.

What’s left to be adopted? Sportswear to add sportiness to activities and non-activities.

My tummy gets filled with these amazing titles I discover and my head spins and eyes kind of groffy (that sounds like a word, but isn’t yet official, I like the sound). Since yesterday evening, have had a slight disturbing ache too. When do I read all the things that hide behind those titles? And then there’s some bit of my own writing too.
