The rules are pretty consistent: The easier it is to create and save a video or other file, the more likely it is to be lost or corrupted The more important the data is, the more likely it is you’ll notice when it gets lost The harder it is to replace, the more frustrating it […]
They will lose your data
For some time now, I’ve been having conversations with friends about data storage and the durability of storage media, considering how much content is getting created.
The other point I have been talking about is revisiting the content we ourselves create. I am a bad revisitor. How about you?
Do you think about the storage systems used for your content?
Quora has a fantastic thing: Question Comments.
It means you can comment on the question (on various aspects like wording, framing, quality, etc.) instead of answering it.
Good pastime for me. Hope the feature stays.
Machine Operator, that’s a common expression.
Software Operator? Nobody uses that.
They say, ‘Familiarity with xyzware is a must.’
Is Operator a downmarket expression? I think it captures skill and efficiency nicely.
SaaS, how beautiful the word looks. No?
The full form is Software as a Service.
Didn’t I tell you in an earlier post that software is a machine? Remember?
Right, so then it should read Machine as a Service.
That sounds like the business of selling and servicing cars. No? Machine as a service! ‘Service’ earns more than the machines for the car companies. Recurring. Except that the upkeep of cars does require ‘service’.
Now I can debate that ‘software requires service’ is as true as ‘car requires service’.
Machine as a Service. Hmm… Assuming the idea conveyed by this expression is digestible, what’s the cost of such a service? Answers are unpleasant.
The way my mind is shaping after using whatever software I’ve had to use so far. I might have to hire an ‘informationalizer’.
Do they find time apart from their job of sales?
If they find time, do they read?
Is a sales guy who is doing good more likely to read than the one who is not doing so good? Or is it the other way round?
Sales guys love to talk, so what do they do to improve their communication skills?
In some other posts I wrote, software is a machine.
In this post, I must write, website is a machine.
And platform is a machine too.
I’ve been working all day on some or the other thing to understand how Indiamart works and how I should shape our business’ presence on the platform.
If you understand that words are a headache, understand also that Indiamart is a strange machine.
Late realization! But then I am so often late.
Start-up is a unit.
Start-up is a unit of stock.
Start-up is a unit of stock that can be stocked by a stockist.
Start-up is a unit of stock that can be stocked by a stockist, and bought and sold based on opportunities.
Start-up is a unit of stock and start-up founders are creators of stock for the purpose of trading.
Non-fluid colleges take away so much of the time of our youngsters.
And then we don’t quite find them employable after college ‘education’.
They don’t find interest in most jobs they take up right after college.
There is no way for them to shape themselves any better since all their time is gone.
What our kids need is hyper-linking of meanings in their heads. That’s a good part of education.
Books help you do that. They give you the theories, formulae, logic, etc. to use/process the information and arrive at inferences/conclusions. And different books use the same information to give you competing results.
On many occasions websites/applications are nothing but instant processing machines based on the same theories, formulae, logic given in some of these books. Feed the info, get the result. Quick and smart.
Websites are nice. Books aren’t so (subscription to websites far outstrip the readers of books).
The youngster doesn’t read books because books use paper, and using paper to make books is against the idea of sustainability.
This is a joke. And so is the youngster.
When bored or feel satiated with my current occupations, I look here and there for interesting ideas, projects or jobs.
Job listings often come with categorical descriptions but without any specific details of the brand; of course so that the recruitment consultants play their roles.
Upon reading those descriptions without the specificities, I get bored and get back to my current occupations which bored me in the first place.
Humans making machines learn, that’s one thing.
The other thing is humans learning machines that humans have made for humans to learn. Or, humans making humans learn machines made by humans for humans to learn. That’s Machine Learning too.
The sentences above may be complicated to read but important to read and understand.
Unfortunately, since software had to be differentiated from hardware and from the machines generally called machines, we called software software. Software is machine. And all kinds of software means all kinds of machines. Most of these machines are badly used currently. We must learn. Machine Learning.
Software attempting to be faceted and 3-dimensional and spending monies over years and years and yet found wanting…
Software failing to be idiosyncratic, in fact turning amazing idiosyncrasies into idiocies…
Businesses trying to softwarize almost everything in their attempt to capture data and pumping in attention and resources into the activity of softwarizing, in the process forgetting or compelled to ignore their reasons for existence.
Hypothesis: Software is a nightmare for many many businesses.
What is a graphic? The thing that can be seen all across the internet? Or graphic is just an adjective and graphics is the real thing? Have I lost it in the first paragraph itself?
But if there is something called an ad, allow me to call something a graphic.
What is a graphic supposed to do? Contrast this with a question on ads. What is an ad supposed to do?
So a graphic is supposed to draw attention? To draw attention from what to what? From the written matter to the graphic matter? Or from whatever you are thinking to the graphic?
You write all the content and then pepper graphics across a web page?
Content in the form of words is not meant to be read? Is it only there to support or to show support for the graphics?
You make such web-pages because your ads don’t do a great job of communicating? Your graphics are semi-ads that do the job of full ads?
You use graphics since you like the eyes of your web-page visitor darting and dancing in zigzag fashions? Zigzag movements of eyes are sexy?
Graphic design and web-page design are exclusive domains? One who does one thing doesn’t understand the other thing?
Web-page is obsolete?
