  • Monster Cushioning

    Dear Shoe-lover,

Am I too harsh? What do you make of this?

Do you believe it? Monster-level cushioning? What’s that? You want your feet to be in the hands of a pedicurist all day long?

32mm cushioning. That’s more than an inch. Did God give you birth with torn heels and spiky floor? Even then you may not need it.

Monster has poky teeth. Monster is big. Monster cushioning would be big poky teethy cushioning? Yeah, right. Go ahead. Buy this shit.

There’s this energy drink too, Monster. Wear these shoes, have Monster energy drink and you’ll be monstrously comfortable. Or monstrously comfortably energetic. Sorry, you decide. What a monstrously bad post!

  • What is Comfort?

    Dear Shoe-lover,

My FB feed showed me this ad. What do you see?

Whether you see something or not, I see a few things very clearly.

The shoe on the left, which should supposedly be worse in terms of comfort, actually has a better shape for the feet to express itself. Look carefully? No, you don’t have eyes for careful looking?

If you are with me till this point and your eyes aren’t tired, here’s another point.

Comfort doesn’t lie in the sole of your shoe. Unless it is really bad, any mildly spongey sole would do. Really… Comfort lies in the free spread/expression of your toes when you have the shoes on.

What does it mean, free spread/expression?

It means you are a dumb-head, dear Shoe-lover. Yeah? Yeah!

That breathable upper, the less said the better. Why? Because it is just cost-cutting and quality-cutting. For an active-on-the-feet sort of shoe-lover, it has a real chance of tearing way too soon. If you haven’t yet tried such a shoe yet, do try and share your true experiences.

    Dear Siddharth,

What right do you have to say anything?

With Nike, I just do it.

With your shoe, what to do!

  • Shoe Shape

    Dear Shoe-lover,

I posted this on Facebook and some friends commented.

2 of them wrote the word ‘comfortable’ without any prompting.

You see, the picture doesn’t show all sides of the shoe. It is a top view, and shows the shape of the front part of the shoe fairly clearly.

Given this picture, mentioning ‘comfortable’ implies one thing. For some (am trying to be semantically correct) wearers, the front part, that is the toe-box part, of the shoes worn generally in this country is a reason for discomfort.

Those are just 2 comments, Siddharth. Do a comprehensive multi-million dollar study and publish a paper, and based on that get an article published once every month for 24 months. Then perhaps some of us may get to read one article somewhere and even then not understand your point. But you can wear your shoes with your head held high you see.

  • Which situation applies to you?

    Dear Shoe Lover,

I want to bother you a bit. I know it’s slightly more difficult than to buy shoes but still, I want you to think a bit more. And be a bit more truthful than your limits permit. Will you?

In case you weren’t bothered and are kind enough, do drop your answer in the comments. Or any other comment that can lead to a chat.

  • Skechers doesn’t talk about it

    Dear Shoe Lover,

You may ask, “Talk about what?”

Have a look at this ad below in today’s TOI:

    Can you guess? No?

Feet are 3-dimensional, so are shoes. And different folks have feet with different combinations of length, width and height.

To my mind, the first and foremost requirement in a shoe is it must adhere to the shape of my foot. Should not be much longer that I need. Should definitely not be narrower than I need.

Do you need all that tech to have a good run? Or do you first need a shoe that fits just about right, like a glove let’s say? Think about it.

Just as your face has a natural expression, so does your foot. Do you want to change the natural expression of your foot because of your shoe?

    Shoes will make you run.

Or may be name of the tech in the shoes will.

Or may be your mind, that has penetrated the tech behind the name of the tech in the shoes, will.

Or may be all three will. No?

Or may be your tuition class will.

Tell us about your favorite pair of shoes, and where they’ve taken you.

Where they’ve taken me? Not far geographically. Largely in my neighborhood.

In terms of feeling, very very far. May be sharpened all my senses, all across my body.

And if there has to be space beyond the toes, it is the big toe that deserves most amount of space. And yet the tip of the typical shoe is in line with the second toe, making that the most spacious part of the shoe.

  • Isn’t it strange that we have to specify…

Isn’t it strange that we have to specify and search for ‘wide’ shoes for normal feet?! Yeah, ill-shaped shoes have become normal shoes for ‘average feet where average = narrow’, and so, normal feet have become broad feet which require ‘special’ wide-foot shoes. What a mess marketers have made! Words can shape the mind and damage our feet.

I wasn’t wearing shoes with heels at all. The kind that we typically find in non-barefoot shoes. Now I am wearing a Nike pair which has at least 1 inch of heel height. And it has helped with my achilles tendonitis issue.
