  • Why is it called so?

Sharing a couple of pictures, taken from the internet, before making my point:

A comparison image showing two types of shoes: on the left, a shoe labeled 'Wide Toe Box' with a natural toe shape on a green background, and on the right, a shoe labeled 'Wide Shoes' with a boat-shaped design on a red background.
Collage of images showcasing various types of shoes with wide toe boxes, including barefoot shoes, sandals, and sneakers, highlighting their natural toe shapes.

They call these shoes, which accommodate your toes and natural shape of the feet without scrunching, ‘wide toe box’ shoes. They’ve also been calling them barefoot shoes for quite long.

Both are misnomers. They imply the acceptance of the boat-shaped shoes as ‘normal’.

Huh! Never in the history of our evolution humans have had boat-shaped feet. Boat-shaped shoes are not normal. Not natural.

It is these newer ‘wide toe box’ shoes which have natural-looking and natural-feeling toe boxes that are normal. Most natural. And therefore, they aren’t ‘wide’. They are exactly as I’ve been trying to say. Natural. Natural toe box. Yeah?

We got used to wearing the non-normal boat-shaped shoes. Only now we’ve started adopting the natural toe box shoes. Long way to go. Have you stepped into the natural ones?

  • Bunion Corrector

My Facebook feed showed me an interesting ad. It’s about this:

They call it Bunion Corrector. It looks technologic!

What a fetish to wear pointy boaty footwear!

Woman, you will adopt this device but you will not stop wearing your boaty footwear! O, you need some marketing campaign to help you change your mind. I got that.

    God bless you!

  • Bio-Shape Shoes

This is as close as it gets to bio-shape shoes in my experience.

I have worn different models of FiveFingers over the years. The first pair which was just like the pair in the pic above proved to be the most durable and amazing while doing my running and other activities.

I see that an Indian online seller is promoting these shoes actively and folks on Facebook make fun of the shoes or the price or both. Amazing! They haven’t experienced anything like this yet and price turns them off to such an extent…

We need more Bio-Shape shoes. Folks across the world, especially in certain countries in the west, have done a lot of work promoting shoes that can be called close to Bio-Shape shoes. In India, we are yet to see good action. Imports are available but nothing much home-made or home-grown really.

  • Ugly Feet

It is easy to find sources of ugliness. And the ultimate source is one’s own body! No?

You can find fault with your face, your fingernails, your tummy, your bums, your feet.

Short people with small feet, they tend to like longer shoes.

  • 144

My list of boaty-shoe-sellers online in India has grown to 144.

    Here, have a look.

Unbelievable! If you window-shop for shoes, the list should serve you really well. May even exhaust you.

Compared to that, the list of footy-shoe-sellers has just 6! At least, so far. Among these 6, 2 are surely imported and are priced accordingly.

This listing business isn’t over. I am sure of discovering more on the boaty side. I will be surprised and glad to find more on the footy side; that’s where I shall look for my next pair.

  • Proof of Boatiness

Since I have been checking websites that are selling shoes, I’ve been seeing plenty of ads of shoe brands in my feed.

And finally, I also come to see the word ‘boat’ to describe a shoe. I was wondering how is it that it’s only me who sees ‘boatiness’ in shoes all around me!

Right then, Boat Shoe looks like an old established name for what I call ‘boaty’ shoes.

Are your feet boaty? Or boat-like? Or boat-shaped?

Why do you wear boat-shaped shoes? Are boaty shoes comfortable? Or do they help you in walking or running?

When your feet aren’t boat-shaped, why wear boat-shaped shoes?

Do you think shoes have an impact on your body, on your health, on your mind? Or shoes are no more than fashion-accessories?

  • Early morning boaty shoes

From an early morning ad shown by FB…

    How boaty?

Or, how very full of boatiness? 😂

Do you see what I see?

  • Boatiness Visually

Do these shoes look anything like the outline of your feet?

Oh, you haven’t seen the outline of your feet yet? Okay, you can do that now!

Can you see the ‘boatiness’ in these shoes?

  • Boatiness

    What’s that?

I do not want to offer a definition or a definitive answer. Why? Coz I’ve just discovered or, say, coined this expression. Let me offer some hints anyway.

Observe your shoes. Notice how they are shaped.

I find that an overwhelming majority of shoes- leather, canvas, sports- and even sandals worn by women exhibit ‘boatiness’. Notice?

  • Comfortable Shoes?

    Dear Shoe Lover,

Actually I must address you as Dear Shoe Lover of India. That sounds about right.

When you are looking for comfort in shoes, the first thing, yes, the first thing that matters is not the material.

Let me repeat that. It is not the material. It is not the soft cushioned sole, or the soft breathable fabric or leather of the uppers, or such material things that matter.

    Then?

What matters is the shape of the shoe. Shape. Shape. Shape.

Just so you understand easily, compare the shape of the sole of your slippers to the shape of the sole of your shoes. You may see a difference. If you do see a difference, ask why are the shapes different!

  • FoShSh

    Dear Razia Sultan,

That has a good sound. Doesn’t it? You wouldn’t have such a word, such a sound in your times I sense. But did you also struggle with the shape of the shoes? You also had shoes that didn’t correspond to the shape of your feet?

It can even serve as a name. A difficult name to spell.

Now, we may need some big marketing campaign for people to believe that they need shoes that correspond to the shape of their feet. How absurd it that Razia Sultan?!

  • Where is the research?!

Indians who wear shoes, do not understand their feet.

Indians who wear shoes, believe that the shape of shoes does not impact their body.

Indians who wear pants, do not understand their skin.

Indians who wear pants, believe that the shape of pants does not impact anything other than their look.

You nut, I wear both, shoes and pants. And I am Indian. And I am right here comfortable in both. You don’t know shit.

Your claims are not backed by research. Your claims are not scientific. Become a scientist, research and then I will evaluate your assertions. If your assertions are not in fashion, you can never be scientific enough. Get lost!

  • Why shoe shapes are not like foot shape?

    Dear Shoe-lover,

Found this on Quora. Copy-pasting as it is.

Question: Why are (almost) all shoes at the end pointed and not shaped like a foot?

Answer: When shoemaking with soles began, pointed toes were easier to make than the other shapes. In earlier civilization, people walked and hiked more through vegetation areas, so pointed shoes helped to part the way. It’s also easier to put these shoes into stirrups when riding saddled horses. The point became the traditional look for most soled footwear made for the general population, mainly because of the cost and the type of work they did. The points have varied in length, some being so long they had a strand of leather attached to hold the points up by tying the strands to their belt. The shorter the point, the closer to the shape for the toe area. Today with all the toe box shapes available, the point still seems to be the preferred, which also comes in length factored choices.

That’s one account. Here’s another by a bot that Quora has deployed to offer ridiculous answers. But ridiculous has truths for you. Here you go:

  • Shoes for Indian Feet?

I wish some Indian shoe offers what a shoe should really really offer. The most basic thing.

I will not repeat myself. Have a look at this anyway.

This ad appeared in my FB feed.

If you read, first it says, Shoes for Indian feet.

Then it says, Same comfort on Day 365 as Day 1.

Then it says Durable Shoes for Indian Feet.

My questions to you are, what does Indian Feet mean? And therefore what do Indian Feet need?

What is comfort dependent on when we are talking about shoes?

  • Between Me and Shoe-lover

Shoe-lover: I have so many shoes in my collection. Are you saying all of them are ill-fitting?

Me: Here, look at my feet. Do they look normal?

Shoe-lover: But all feet are not the same.

Me: But can all feet be called normal?

Shoe-lover: Yes, all feet are normal.

Me: Normal, varied, different and unique too. Which word should the shoe-maker focus on?

    Shoe-lover: Whatttt? Which word?

Me: I said, normal, varied, different and unique.

    Shoe-lover: Varied?

  • India’s Premium Shoe Market

    Dear Shoe-lover,

I can even address you as Premium Shoe-lover; am sure you’ve spent a bomb on your shoes.

Now I have something for you, in case you feel like putting your mind to it. Or your silly shoe to it.

Your disagreement with my understanding is unimportant to me. But if you’ve read and tried to understand, you are important to me.

And if you’ve commented, God bless you with amazing shoes and compliments from everyone who notices your shoes. Paisa vasool, you see!

  • Observing feet in shoes

    Dear Shoe-lover,

This will require some visualization, especially if you don’t use elevators daily.

Waiting for the elevator and then, standing inside the elevator, eyes mostly staring at the floor, I get to see the shoes of fellow elevator-riders.

Most bulging at the sides of the feet, as if trying to push the uppers out.

My hypothesis feels validated: shoe-makers in India sell ill-fitting shoes to Indians.

  • Great Profits for Relaxation

Yesterday, I read a post which mentioned that shoe-shape has been perfected.

    I was amused.

To amuse me more, here comes an ad in my FB feed.

Relaxo slippers may feel relaxo; I am not confident about that but for the shape of minimally designed slippers. I haven’t checked Relaxo shoes yet. Am sure they aren’t relaxo.

Meanwhile, great profits can always make me feel relaxed.

  • Understanding Comfort Shumfort

    Dear Shoe-lover,

Let me tell you, your shoes are 3D, just as your foot is.

What does 3D mean? 3 dimensional.

Have you noticed a brick carefully? No? It has 6 sides. Top, bottom, front, back, left and right.

It’s the same way with your foot. Top, bottom, front, back, left and right.

When shoe-marketer talks about cushion and arch-support and such things, it means he/she is only talking about comfort for the bottom part of your foot. Yeah?

What about the other 5 sides? You don’t feel any discomfort at the front or at the back or the left or the right or the top part? None! You have some special foot?

  • Falana Zaroori Hai!

What is Falana? That is a bad question. In fact, I can master the art of bad titles too.

I sense these decisions are typically and heavily influenced by doctors’ diagnosis of the situation. So what is this ad with Dhoni’s face attempting to do?

Mutual Funds Sahi Hai! Treatment Zaroori Hai!

Shoe shape par dhyan dena bahut important hai!

Pull-up bar lagakar hang karna interior design ka part hai!

Oh God, my punchlines are so long and taxing on the readers’ mental faculties!

I don’t even have money for one such insert in TOI.

Huh! Your posts are pathetic! Tumhara treatment zaroori hai!
