  • What is a part of what?

Marketers have for long been harping on ‘creating experiences’ and ‘going beyond the product’.

    My question:

Is product a part of the experience? Or, is experience a part of the product?

We have Venn diagrams and we have sets and subsets and such concepts and theories. And yet when it comes to behaving, operating and moving in this world to organize ourselves and accomplish certain things, these concepts can lead us astray.

If product is a part of the experience, then experience would need a name and need a software like charting of paths and protocols. Once that is done experience becomes the product or part of the product. In which case, it would be great to begin with the premise that ‘experience is a part of the product’. And then look at how expansive or how narrow you want the experience to be for your customers. Then you look at effectiveness, productivity and efficiency and other measurements that you have.

  • It is not Storage

The way sentences are crafted, we come to believe the computational view, well promoted in Facebook’s language and algorithmic feature.

    MEMORY IS NOT STORAGE

Memory strictly is a unique feature among living beings. It may get aided or distorted or changed basis certain factors.

Often we say, retrieving memory. It isn’t a memory actually if it isn’t retrieved. What I mean, there is no memory without retrieval. Unrestrieved memory is no memory. You see that crazy use of words. Sorry if it is confusing and thank you if you get it.

In fact, there could be a meta-memory which hints at memory of a retrieved memory, that’s possible. But it ends there. RETRIEVAL cannot be teased apart from memory.

  • I got this

    I got this.

There is this popular expression WORKFLOW. I liken it to Business Processes. Correct me if they are different.

Repetition of WORKFLOW makes or breaks your chances of mastering the workflow; that phenomenon in which you are moving satisfactorily and elegantly into and out of your work. Demands consciousness (Jaynesian sort), or conscious attention, at least till you get a hang of stuff in the initial few repetitions.

And then we all know what’s HABIT. Seen simply, it is a mastery of certain ways of doing and thinking, supposedly not so sophisticated as what constitutes WORKFLOW.

    Let me cut this short.

    List all your habits.

And list the end points of your habits, the last movement, the punctuation where the habit is treated to be over.

And then consciously, deliberately, add a move that extends the habit; it is like adding a phrase, a clause or extending a sentence with some more words using commas.

See how it gives a different shape to your routine, even to your WORKFLOW.

See how such experiments take you close to that elegance only a master can exhibit.

I call this HABIT EXTENSION. Note that down.

  • When does it become memory?

I just came across a book title WHEN WE ARE NO MORE: HOW DIGITAL MEMORY IS SHAPING OUR FUTURE.

How easy to lure us into thinking that it is DIGITAL MEMORY!

    It is storage. DIGITAL STORAGE.

  • Vacation

I can’t get this thought out of my head. I call it Tennis Vacation. You need a good parcel of land for that. In India, that’s difficult.

Similar to that, in a slightly different shape. Bookotel.

    Repeat that. Bookotel.

  • It’s All Stock in Trade

    What all?

Stock market, where operators trade in equities and other kinds of units/assets…

Start-ups for venture capitalists are ‘stock’.

Parcels of land for land-dealers are ‘stock’.

CVs in the databases of recruitment agencies are ‘stock’.

Earrings in my inventory boxes are ‘stock’.

    Am I ‘stock’?

Am I ‘cog in the wheel’?

I may be a stock-handler or stock-manager for the venture capitalist, a motor to power the wheel of the carriage containing all the stock.

    I am just a stock-handler.

The capitalist is in a meta-position. He is the original stock holder, and trader, and venture capitalist, land owner or land dealer.

  • Brand

    The word is abused enough.

Differentiation, expressing differentiation, all forgotten so soon.

Folks can’t even express the ‘category’ their business operates in. But go about tomtomming ‘brand brand brand’ in every conversation.

What did they do their MBAs and certifications for? SEO?

  • Space Compression

    Virtual World

    (Online) Gaming

    Videogame

What are the opposite respectively for each of these expressions?

    Physical World / Real World

(Offline) Gaming? Should be a Cricket Ground or Football Ground!

    Non-video Game?

It gets weird as we think how easily some expressions slip out of our mouth and are understood just as easily.

One of the greatest losses in cities is this compression of space. No urban planner or politician has been able to do much about it. No community either, if one can find such a thing in any city.

  • Website, to glam or not to?

‘Website’ is a misnomer. But what we call ‘website’ ought to carry a name.

Someone called it a website once and after that everyone felt like calling it a website. So we call it a website.

Plenty of our buyers tell us your website, www.mississippiearrings.com, ought to be glam.

We started selling the kind of earrings we sell so that your faces look glam, your looks look glam.

We did not start the website for the website to look glam.

Okay, let me put this in some other terms. Website is not a physical building that stands in some space, and that tries to stand out in that space. Website is just a background against which you view something, in our case our earrings.

Imagine paper trying to be glam! What will happen to the writing? For colorful glam pics, paper can be glossy but that’s that. Paper ought to be background and remain that way.

Now you would say, website is a structure too. But I would say, structure isn’t website. Structure is exactly that, structure. Or let me say, structure is a structure against the background of website.

Does it resonate with you? Does this makes sense? To me it does. When I have better words and explanations, I will write another post.

  • In Luhmann-esque terms

Autopoiesis of volume, that’s what trading businesses get into and that’s what a lot of B2B businesses strive to get into. O, feels so depressing to think of it. Volume is such a voluminous concept, a voluminous imagination.
