  • Cultivation of disdain for reading that’s one of…

Cultivation of disdain for reading, that’s one of the successes of Indian education system.

The association of what they call ‘textbook’ with classroom, with important questions, with getting marks through the excruciating process of insane amount of temporary memorizing for exams, with funny teachers, makes sure that most of the youngsters look at ‘reading’ with utter disdain.

Reading means ‘padhaaku’, means ‘spectacles’, means ‘impractical’, means ‘theoretical’, means ‘philosophical’.

Reading doesn’t mean ‘hard work of attempts at understanding’, ‘diligence’, ‘intelligence’, ‘smartness’, ‘improvement’, ‘beholding’, ‘observation’.

So one of the most basic, accessible, important, entertaining and rewarding skills for growth in one’s life is found to be one of the most repulsive activities among youngsters.

This, my friends, is the success of India’s education system.

It still doesn’t mean ‘read’, the double-blue-ticks in Whatsapp. All it means is ‘seen inside the chat window’. In the age of forwards, only ‘read’ has value.

Composed by you, it will be read. And the one who still doesn’t read, can rot. Worry not about the double-blue-ticks.

  • Two points in the context of using software…

Two points in the context of using software, made by others, in ways that can serve us well:

    • Treat every software as an object
    • Irrespective of the nature of the object, ask yourself what you would like to do with it

Say, in a weird situation, you have a nail to hammer but no hammer. So would you not hammer the nail in? You’ll search for something that serves as a hammer. You’ll look around and you find a weirdly shaped small block of stone. Or say a smoothly shaped paper weight. The obvious question: can this be used to hammer the nail?

3rd point, once you’ve figured what you would like to do with the software object:

    • So which part of the stone can really hammer the nail and which part you will use to grip and apply a hammering force?

4th point, remember to start with a question and ask a question of any kind in the context of any software object.

Phew, long post by my standards. Any useful?

Actually folks are getting ill in a peculiar sort of way across the world, and we attribute it to what we call as Corona virus.

Since a person like me isn’t into micro-biology, there’s no way for me to observe, identify and read stuff that makes sense. And so it is virus. Let it be virus. I don’t believe it. That’s the way life is.

    Sleeping – 8 hrs
Standing – barely or less than half an hour in the entire day (apart from standing for the purpose of lifting weights)
    Sitting – You can imagine!
Moving on 2 legs – 1.5 hours hopefully (apart from moving for the purpose of lifting weights)

I won’t be surprised if Yoga emerged as a negation of standing, and accentuation of sitting for the purpose of good health, and experiencing a lot of moving without moving much, because it is quite obvious that we can’t move all through the day. Do farmers Yoga? Does the roaming vegetable vendor Yoga?

If ISPs limit the number of emails one can send, it means that these bulk email senders have special arrangements with these ISPs. Only then sending millions of emails every day is possible. That arrangement needs looking after. Hmm…

Looking for precision in an activity may help us turn anything into a sport. But why turn it into a sport? Perhaps it helps in keeping records. It helps in observing improvements of a certain kind. You against you. You against an invisible you. You against an invisible other.

Reminded me of something I posted yesterday.

‘As one progresses in practice, there are nuances added and these can go really deep. The only thing that becomes apparent as I spend more time in this pose is that vast tracts of body and mind remain out of reach. On the outside the asanas are better looking but internally, there are deserts of silence. It’s a slow progression, or perhaps a progressing slowly as physical prowess gives way to a more detached viewing. One of curiosity and experimentation.’

Great zone to be in. Some progressions go much beyond anticipation at the start of the activity. I too observe that in my attempts to improve physically.

Say I got terribly shortchanged. Unfair and this and that. So what! How many more years will I float among these images? There may be, who knows, plenty of more embarrassments to walk into and experiment and judge and have fun.
