  • Labyrinthine Luhmann

Luhmann himself described his theory as “labyrinthine” or “non-linear”, and claimed he was deliberately keeping his prose enigmatic to prevent it from being understood “too quickly”, which would only produce simplistic misunderstandings.

  • Title of the 2nd Chapter

In Luhmann’s Love as Passion, the 2nd chapter carries this title:

Love as a Generalized Symbolic Medium of Communication

In my life I never thought I would be reading the expression LOVE amidst such words. But then it is Mr Luhmann and he can make it sound dry like this and yet ever intriguing all the same.

And then there are those who do their doctorates in sociology. Hello Mr Phd in Sociology, do you have Mr Luhmann’s felicity and mind to subject and address LOVE this way?

  • Dear Mr. Luhmann,

Did you ever go to a gym? Did you ever think about exercising and matters like that? Of course, you would have had to walk as a human being who has a body… Reading your thoughts and books gives me a feeling of how much and how intensely you would’ve read on any given day. That would leave almost nothing else for you to do at the end of the day…

    Until next time…

  • Affordances

While reading Luhmann in Love as Passion:

In the course of such evolutionary transformations, word forms, set phrases, adages and precepts may very well continue to be handed down over the generations; however, their meaning changes and with it the way in which they pinpoint a specific referent, encapsulate particular experiences and open up new perspectives.

This sounds similar to what I understand as Affordances.

  • In Luhmann-esque terms

Autopoiesis of volume, that’s what trading businesses get into and that’s what a lot of B2B businesses strive to get into. O, feels so depressing to think of it. Volume is such a voluminous concept, a voluminous imagination.

  • What am I reading! What is this! Mind boggling. While I understand quite a lot of it, if someone asked me to write a sentence of the type that I am reading, well, God save me! Insane writing Mr. Luhmann. And insane translation.

  • I have to postpone…

I have to postpone every single thing till I have a good fill of Niklas Luhmann’s thoughts…

Words are trailing reality and so the mind hasn’t yet caught up with reality.

Hello Mr Luhmann, thank you very much for writing so much.
