Often category is defined or expressed in terms of objects.
Examples:
SUV (Sports Utility Vehicle), Truck, etc.
Air-Conditioner, Refrigerator, etc.
FMCG, in that you have all sorts of things like Potato Chips, Ketchup, Biscuits, Shampoo, etc.
These are fine. Nothing wrong in defining categories this way.
When it comes to significant innovations, Marketing men have to take decisions related to category definitions and coin new category names even. And that’s fair.
But here’s the thing.
Any object (or thing) derives and delivers its value through the movements it extracts from or induces a customer or buyer or user to go through.
{Read that again in case the sentence feels complicated. I’ll try to express in simpler words when I get those words.}
Any object (or thing) derives and delivers its value through the movements it extracts from or induces a customer (or buyer or user) to go through.
So the challenge for a significant innovation (and therefore a new category) is new movements. In other words, one can ask, what are the new movements that this innovation requires from its customers or users? Or, which old movements will have to be stopped and new movements will have to be learned for this innovation?
If there are significant new movements or changes in old movements, that is the challenge for a new category. And that is also the marketing challenge. NEW MOVEMENTS or CHANGE IN MOVEMENTS.
Buyers resist adopting new movements. Body resists new movements. New movements = Change. Change isn’t always easily acceptable.
They go with the moniker of Digital Marketers. Their vocabulary is limited and so every other digital ad starts with something like ‘Elevate’ or ‘Level up’ or just ‘Up’ or some such word indicating ‘high’ in some way.
Youngsters think that being able to use graphic design software makes them creative and being able to place ads in social media by looking at metrics makes them a marketer.
Excessive laptopping and smart-phoning has made us robots or machine operators.
I have admitted that, to make certain things, I have to be a machine-operator, no more.
I must understand how intricate forms are created.
Without being a machine-operator, I will not understand how to set up algorithms.
Why? Actually that’s my label. And we have worked in a way and maintained such quality and service levels that quite a few of our patrons, over the years, each has bought more than 100 or 200 or 300 pairs of earrings and jewelry pieces!
Fair to call it my favorite?
The other favorite is Sailor; have you tried Sailor’s fountain pens? Do you write with fountain pens?

I am trying to recall shoe labels that I am really fond of. Hard pressed. None of them impress any more. They are all boat-shaped funny shoes.
We create an ecom website on Shopify. We do not like it for some reason. We want to create a new website without using some other platform. Everything is there but the structure we created on Shopify won’t port (or move) to another platform just like that.
You do not like a Toyota, you can go try a Honda or a Ford or whatever. There’s no issue of porting.
You do not like a Lamy, you can go try a Jinhao or a Diplomat or something else. There’s no issue of porting.
The issue of data and structure porting almost ensures imprisonment.

Books, made of paper, lying on a book-shelf for years and years… Stock of books lying on the the book-shelf means Storage. This can go on for decades and decades. No electricity or fuel needed actually, except perhaps when you produce those books using printing technology or machines and then transport those books to their destinations. You can see that stock. You can witness that storage.
Non-paper data? Youtube? You can make use of that only and only if the storage disks spin using electricity. Instantaneous use means the storage disks are running all the time using electricity.
Are all these thoughts ‘first thing’?
Social Media scrolling means allowing the unpresent mob to hammer you with whatever.
This wish can’t really be constant, isn’t it!
These days I wish I slept more than I do every 24 hours. Wait, I wish I really got tired of doing something worthwhile and then fell into deep sleeps; I don’t mind dreaming while sleeping.
This reminds me of BRAND. The expression BRAND.
I find TATTOO very similar to BRAND.
BRAND is that mark that has been ‘burnt’, sort of permanently. Difficult to erase. Difficult to get rid of once the brand has been burnt on to the skin.
TATTOO isn’t that torturesome as BRAND, but it is also difficult to erase, difficult to get rid of.
Now the thing is while a BRAND can be burned in or into or on their heads, TATTOO can only be put on their heads. ‘In’ their heads takes something.
At this point, what excites me the most is under-ground infrastructure, especially piping. Running under the surface, invisible.
And this morning I thought about modern building designs and lack of symmetric intricate curves and turns of lines.
Intricate symmetry counters decay. Modern straight lines or simple curves feel waste much too soon.

Come to think of it. You cannot dream of your home at will.
Dream home means ideal home, I get it.
Friends working in tandem, taking great decisions, and then partying every night and sleeping on time, and going for morning walks… Does that come close to a dream office or workplace? May be, that’s what home is for me.
I have been interested in dream interpretations, though I could plod neither through Carl Jung’s nor through Freud’s celebrated texts.
Yesterday morning, in my dream I was surrounded by gangsters, enemies surely, and I could wrestle two of them out of position, flip them over the balcony railings and held them firmly suspended on my arms. Other gangmates stood there watching the spectacle.
What’s interacting with what? Hypothesis: Dream Interactions lead to Dream Interpretations.
