The fifth ODI between Australia and New Zealand ended in an anti-climax.
NZ needs to score 33 in 36 balls with 4 wickets in hand. That was the equation. Seeing that, one might say, "Oh! Just 4 wickets left. Australia might pull it off. A tight match that." That's a statistician's eye. They see the past to predict the future.
Anyone watching the match could've easily said New Zealand had 80% chances of winning. Why? Coz they could see the spirit of the batsmen, the form, the momentum, the running between the wickets and all of that. That's a passionate follower's eye. They predict the future based on the spirit.
Duckworth-Lewis method is inadequate. Stats can't capture the spirit. Stats can discourage when the mood is upbeat.
Newspapers keep throwing stats every day. One day, it's recession. Another day it's recovery. Another day, it's depression. Yes another day, it's relief.
Forget it. What's your mood? What's your spirit?
